The Basilica Cathedral Notre Dame de la Treille from Lille
Majestically and proudly anchored in the heart of the Old Town of Lille, the building owes its origin to Mgr Régnier, the then-archbishop of Cambrai, in order to shelter the statue of the Virgin (the only vestige from the old Saint Pierre's Collegial which was wilfully destroyed in 1304 by Philippe le Bel upon the escalade of the City).
The monument of neo-gothic style was finished in 1874, and in 1913 the Vatican created the diocese of Lille. The Pope Pius X proclaimed the basilica as a Cathedral in 1914.
Recently finished and equipped with its new porch, the Cathedral is getting a real renewal of enthusiasm and frequentation . |
